For over 26 years, Nicole Petersen has been an integral part of the ilumin team, bringing a unique combination of clinical expertise and business acumen to her current role as Modern Vision Billing Manager.
With 30 years of experience in eye care, Nicole’s journey has been one of growth, learning, and unwavering dedication to patient care and team leadership. Nicole’s career in eye care began while she was in college, working as a receptionist in an optical department. She quickly transitioned to being an optician and later joined ilumin, where she spent 18 years as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) in a bustling retina clinic. Reflecting on her time in clinic, Nicole shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed learning the amazing world of ophthalmology, helping patients, developing relationships with them, and the camaraderie with fellow staff and physicians.”
Over the years, Nicole has worn many hats, from managing medical supply orders to serving as the point of contact for drug representatives and contributing to software committee projects. When a billing department position opened, Nicole seized the opportunity to explore the business side of the practice. She now oversees billing for all of Modern Vision partner practices and thrives in her leadership role. “I value that I can effectively use my COA knowledge and combine it with the business side of billing,” she said.
“It brings a different perspective and efficiency to my role.”
Nicole finds excitement in the ever-evolving challenges of the billing world, from navigating complex insurance policies to mentoring her team. She proudly describes her department as “a very well-oiled machine.” Behind the scenes, her team collaborates with receptionists, technicians, and physicians to ensure seamless care for patients, handling everything from insurance authorizations to claim resolutions.
What makes Nicole most passionate about her work is the Modern Vision model. “It’s exciting to have a front-row seat to the growth of Modern Vision and be able to use my knowledge, experiences, and skill set to be an integral part of it all,” she shared. Nicole sees the innovative, patient-focused approach of Modern Vision as a game-changer in ophthalmology. “Offering patients every level of care within the same umbrella is truly a cutting-edge concept, and I couldn’t be more honored and excited to be a part of it.”
Nicole also takes pride in her team, praising their dedication and hard work. “My team prides themselves on going the extra mile for the patient and the practice,” she said.
“The staff is truly a family, and this culture has been part of ilumin for as long as I’ve been here.”
