What are cataracts?
In order for the eye to focus light properly onto the retina, the lens must be clear. A clouded lens is called a cataract. Cataracts develop as part of the normal aging process, but usually do not become symptomatic until after the age of 60.
As cataracts progress, you may have symptoms such as cloudy, blurry, or dim vision, difficulty seeing at night or in low light, sensitivity to light and glare, halos around lights, faded or yellowed colors, frequent changes in lens prescription, and/or double vision. What are my options?
While cataracts are certainly a nuisance, the good news is that vision loss due to advancing cataracts is not permanent. Sometimes simply changing your glasses or contact lens prescription improves things enough that cataract surgery can be deferred. If your vision cannot be improved adequately with a change in prescription, the cataract can be removed in a brief (usually about 30 minute) outpatient surgical procedure.
With cataract surgery, your eye’s cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a state-of-the-art clear artificial lens implant (called an intraocular lens or IOL). There are many different types of IOLs, including lenses to correct astigmatism and ones that work in a way similar to bifocals. However, not every patient is a candidate for these premium lens implants.
