Eye-Healthy Foods for Every Day Living

Although there is no current cure for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), studies show that healthy eating habits may reduce the risk of AMD, or delay its progression. The following foods may help protect your eyes against AMD:

  • Fruits and vegetables containing Vitamin C: oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, papaya, green peppers, and tomatoes.
  • Foods and oils containing Vitamin E: safflower and corn oil, almonds, pecans, wheat germ, and sunflower seeds.
  • Deep orange or yellow fruits and vegetables containing beta-carotene: cantaloupe, mangos, apricots, peaches, sweet potatoes, and carrots.
  • Dark leafy vegies that are sources of lutein and zeaxathin: spinach, kale, broccoli, and asparagus.
  • Zinc-rich foods: beef, pork, lamb, oysters, eggs, shellfish, peanuts, milk, and whole grains.
  • Sources of omega-3 fatty acids: leafy green vegetables, nuts, fish, canola oil, soy, and flaxseed.

Choosing to implement healthy eating habits can affect every aspect of your life, and good eye health can have a tremendous impact on quality of life.  A balanced diet with lots of the above foods can help you to maintain good vision.  If you have any questions or concerns about this information, please contact your ilumin ophthalmologist.
