Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a type of eye surgery that involves replacing the natural lens in the eye with an artificial lens to correct vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It’s similar to cataract surgery, but instead of removing a cloudy lens, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one to improve vision.

How RLE works

Before the surgery, the eye surgeon will use a numbing drop to make sure you’re comfortable. They may also give you a mild sedative to help you relax.
The surgeon will make a small incision in the cornea and use a probe to break up the natural lens into small pieces. This is called phacoemulsification.
The surgeon will use suction to remove the broken-up lens pieces through the small incision.
The surgeon will place a new, clear artificial lens inside the eye to replace the natural lens. The lens is usually folded up and inserted through the same small incision used to remove the natural lens.
After the surgery, you may experience some discomfort and blurry vision, but it usually improves within a few days. It may take a week or two for your vision to stabilize and for you to be able to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses.
RLE is a good option for people who have moderate to severe nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, and who are not eligible for other types of laser eye surgery. It’s also a good option for people who are starting to develop cataracts, which is a clouding of the natural lens that can cause vision problems.
